This plot contains an excellent example of mesophytic, calcareous Coastal Plain forest occupying a ravine slope downcut into lower Pliocene shell deposits of the Yorktown Formation. Fagus grandifolia and Acer barbatum are the overstory dominants, but Tilia americana and Quercus muhlenbergii are associates indicative of calcium-enriched soils. Several noteworthy calciphilic herbs also occur, including Mitella diphylla (only Coastal Plain station in VA), Panax quinquefolius, and Solidago flexicaulis.
